New Design Inspirations with Dark Oak
Interesting New Design Inspirations with Dark Oak
Dark toned wood makes a bold, daring statement in every room. It is ideal for living and dining spaces, although it can be used effectively in the kitchen and bathroom too. Utilising dark wood types in the bedroom can be a good idea and add a sensual touch.
One thing to be very aware of when using dark wood in your interior design or renovation projects is that even natural and lighter shades of wood tend to absorb light and require additional, well-placed lighting. This is especially the case for using dark wood. If you’re using dark wood for your walls, floor or even ceiling then you want to be very particular about where you place your lighting. Tracked lighting may be prudent, and a few well-placed lamps won’t go astray. There are some lovely lamp types available that can provide aesthetic benefits as well as illumination.

Dark Wood Tones for the Living Space
Having a living room utilising dark wood can be a good design option. For your floors, go with something on the lighter side of the dark stain spectrum. This allows you to use the much darker tones for your windowsills and furniture for a bold impact. You could go with grey or eggshell blue for the walls, and bold whites for some pieces of furniture. A splash of brighter colours can be included in artworks or some well-placed flowers.

You could also do the opposite to the above idea, using much darker wood for your floors and a lighter tone for your windowsills and coffee table.

Dark Wood Tones for The Master Bedroom
This design aesthetic only requires one aspect of dark timber. Choose a monochromatic tone for the walls, such as dove-grey. Then make a bold statement with a dark wooden dresser with gold trim around its edges or its drawers. This can be matched with a gold-framed mirror. The gold will really stand out against the black and when placed against the grey walls the gold and black make a very strong statement.
Dark Wood for the Kitchen and Dining Space
Open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces are gaining popularity and currency among Australian families, and designers are coming up with interesting, innovative and inspiring ideas to keep up.
Dark shelving, cabinetry and dining tables give visual focal points, especially when contrasted with bright white walls, drawers, linen and small accessories and tables.
Adding chromatic splashes in the forms of stools, and light fittings evoke an industrial feel while jabs of colour here and there are lovely additions.
